Urban flooding and gully erosion across Jos North, Jos South and adjoining LGAs
Heavier climate-driven rains, blocked drainage and rapid urban expansion are combining to produce flash floods, submerged farmland, displacement and active gully erosion across Jos North, Jos South and surrounding local government areas. Major flood events in 2022 and 2024 damaged homes and displaced households in areas such as Angwan Rogo, Bauchi Road and Naraguta. PEPSA attributes much of the recurring flooding to drainage channels choked by indiscriminate waste disposal, while active gully erosion continues to eat into land around the metropolis. Inadequate urban drainage remains the central gap, and civil-society groups have questioned whether flood early-warning and preparedness are strong enough.




Evidence and current condition
- Climate-driven heavy rainfall combined with blocked drainage channels and unplanned urban expansion has produced repeated flash floods, with major flood events recorded in 2022 and 2024.
- Flooding has submerged farmland, damaged homes and displaced households across Jos North (Angwan Rogo, Bauchi Road, Naraguta), Jos South and other LGAs.
- PEPSA attributes recurring flash floods in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis largely to drainage channels blocked by indiscriminate waste disposal.
- Active gully erosion continues to eat into land in and around the Jos metropolis, requiring engineered gully rehabilitation.
- Inadequate urban drainage remains the central gap, and civil-society voices (including FENRAD) have questioned the adequacy of flood early-warning and preparedness.

Required interventions
- Flood and erosion control works funded through the 2025 state budget, with several drainage and gully works reported at various stages of completion.
- Dredging of waterways and desilting of drainage channels ahead of the rainy season by PEPSA across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis.
- Gully rehabilitation in parts of Jos metropolis and watershed works delivered through the World Bank-supported ACReSAL and EIB-NEWMAP programmes supervised by the state Ministry of Environment.
- Establishment of Africa’s first sub-national Climate Assembly in Plateau State as a participatory platform for climate and flood-resilience decision-making.
- Strengthened flood early-warning, community preparedness and enforcement against building and dumping on drainage channels.
